Punjab Government distributes its development funds across development sectors & regions
Punjab Government is consciously pursuing a development agenda which was people-centric and expressly inclined towards the lower income segments and areas. The perception that large budgetary allocations of development funds have been made to one district was not based on facts.
P&D Spokesman said that all districts in Punjab Province were accorded due priority in allocation of the development program. Conscious effort is being made to enhance the allocation of budget to the districts in the south which was higher than the population of these districts.
Government of Punjab is committed to undertake major projects in other cities as well. Case in point is expansion of the Safe City Project to 5 more cities; including Multan and Bahawalpur. The Metro Bus Project, which was pioneered in Lahore, was subsequently extended to Rawalpindi and Multan. Government is committed to balanced development of the entire province. In fact more allocations are being made for districts which have lagged behind in development. Examples of development projects in such districts include: Recep Tayyip Erdogan Hospital in Muzaffargarh; Teaching Hospital in D.G. Khan; Dualization of Hasilpur Bahawalpur Road; Khawaja Farid Engineering University in Rahim Yar Khan and Veterinary University, Bahwalpur. Recently a mega project “Dualization of Khanewal – Lodhran Road” costing 22 billion has been launched.
The Punjab Growth Strategy 2015—2018 aims for a holistic approach to development and growth by employing multiple methods that cater to urban as well as rural areas. In this spirit, the comprehensive Annual Development Program 2016-17 has equitable distribution of development funds across sectors/regions, he concluded.
