BRIEF ON PUNJAB ECONOMIC OPPORTUNITIES PROGRAMME (PEOP)-DFID ASSISTED

1.      The Government of the Punjab in collaboration with the Department for International Development (DFID), UK launched the programme “Punjab Economic Opportunities Programme”- (PEOP) in the FY 2010-11 in four poorest districts of Southern Punjab i.e. Bahawalpur, Bahawalnagar, Lodhran and Muzaffargarh. The Programme initially focused on poverty alleviation through provision of marketable skills and enhancing the quality and quantity of livestock in the region. But later on the livestock component was closed on 31.10.2012 on the recommendation of DFID due to poor progress / utilization of funds. Out 164 selected trainees, 139 trainees has completed 2 years Livestock Assistant Diploma (LAD) programme on 30.06.2014 and the liabilities of all the campuses have been paid.

2.      10 additional districts of Punjab i.e. Lahore, Sheikhupura, Gujranwala, Faisalabad, Sargodha, Chiniot, Narowal, R.Y Khan, Khanewal and Vehari were included in 1st revised PC-I during 2013. However, the 2nd revised PC-I has also been approved at a cost of £ 55.000 million equivalent Rs.8,783.970 million (50:50 sharing of DFID and GoPb) with increased target from 135,000 to 145,500 and extension in gestation upto December, 2016 during 2015-16.
